State of the Field: Gender and Sexuality in Early American History -- SPONSORED BY THE STEVEN J. SCHOCHET ENDOWMENT FOR GLBT STUDIES AND CAMPUS LIFE Saturday, March 28, 2009; 08:30 AM In the last four decades, the study of gender and sexuality in Early American history has come into its own, undergoing major transformations in the process. The focus in the 1970s on social histories of (white) family ife and Anglo-American gender roles gave way in the 1980s and beyond to histories that explore not only the experiences of increasingly diverse women, but also the impact of gender (including masculinity) and sexuality on social, economic, and political structures. Scholars have also extended their analysis well beyond the original thirteen British colonies, deepening our understanding of the roles of gender and sexuality in cultural exchanges of many different kinds. In this panel, historians whose work represents some of this broad spectrum of research will speak to the changes that have marked this vibrant field and will evaluate the most recent scholarly trends. Moderator: Susan Juster, University of Michigan Carol F. Karlsen, University of Michigan Ann M. Little, Colorado State University R. Todd Romero, University of Houston Jennifer M. Spear, Simon Fraser University |
