2011 OAH AVERY O. CRAVEN AWARD

Home

The Avery O. Craven Award, first given in 1985, is awarded annually by the Organization of American Historians for the most original book on the coming of the Civil War, the Civil War years, or the Era of Reconstruction, with the exception of works of purely military history. The exception recognizes and reflects the Quaker convictions of Craven, President of the Organization of American Historians 1963-1964.

Each entry must be published during the period January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010. One copy of each entry must be received by each committee member by October 1, 2010.

Please note that it is the policy of the OAH to honor those applicants who have submitted their applications on or before the stated deadline date. Applications which are not received by close of business on the deadline date will not be considered.

Final page proofs may be used for books to be published after October 1, 2010 and before January 1, 2011. If a final page proof is submitted, a bound copy of the entry must be received no later than January 7, 2011. No late submissions will be accepted. If a book carries a copyright date that is different from the publication date, but the actual publication date falls during the correct time frame making it eligible, please include a letter of explanation with each copy of the book sent to committee members.

The winning author receives $500. The publisher receives a certificate.

The award will be presented at the 2011 annual meeting of the OAH in Houston, Texas, March 17-20. One copy of each entry, clearly labeled "2011 Avery O. Craven Award Entry," must be mailed directly to:
