The Ellis W. Hawley Prize, given for the first time in 1997, is awarded annually for the best book-length historical study of the political economy, politics, or institutions of the United States, in its domestic or international affairs, from the Civil War to the present. The prize is given in honor of Ellis W. Hawley, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Iowa, an outstanding historian of these subjects.

Eligible works shall include book-length historical studies, written in English. Each entry must be published during the period January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008. One copy of each entry must be received by each committee member by October 1, 2008. Final page proofs may be used for books to be published after October 1, 2008 and before January 1, 2009. If a final page proof is submitted, a bound copy of the entry must be received no later than January 7, 2009. No late submissions will be accepted. If a book carries a copyright date that is different from the publication date, but the actual publication date falls during the correct time frame making it eligible, please include a letter of explanation with each copy of the book sent to committee members.

The winner of the prize will receive $500.  The publisher will be honored with a certificate of merit. The prize will be presented at the 2009 annual meeting of the OAH in Seattle, Washington, March 26-29.  One copy of each entry, clearly labeled "2009 Ellis W.
