Professional Development Opportunity For Community College Historians
The OAH, with the generous support of both Pearson and Bedford/St. Martin's, is pleased to offer an exciting selection of professional opportunities specifically developed for community college historians at its 2009 meeting in Seattle.
In keeping with our ongoing commitment to the improvement of history teaching and its firm support of historians teaching in the community colleges, OAH will launch its first half-day workshop for community college historians on Thursday, March 26th. Workshop sessions will focus on "Diverse Skill Levels in the Community College Classroom" and "Assessment Issues and Strategies" and will be followed by a luncheon featuring well-known scholar, teacher, and author, H. W. Brands. Thanks to a generous donation from Pearson Publishers, the cost of this workshop, including lunch and a coffee break, is only $25. Workshop registrants must also register for the annual meeting, and can do so using the links above.
On Friday afternoon, March 27th, the OAH Community College Committee is sponsoring a session on "Teaching the American History Survey as if the West Coast Mattered (a lot)." This session features a lively team of historians from community colleges and universities, all equally passionate about including west coast history.
On Saturday the 28th, community college historians will gather for our second annual OAH breakfast, hosted again by Bedford St. Martin's Press. At this breakfast you will meet OAH leaders, members of the OAH Committee on Community Colleges, and other community college historians, and you will hear about many upcoming workshops and professional development opportunities open to community college historians. The OAH recognizes the vital work done by community college historians and plans to continue to provide these members many opportunities for professional development, collegiality, and personal enrichment. Through services such as the community colleges workshops and this meeting workshop, the work of the Committee on Community Colleges, and OAH publications--the Journal of American History, the OAH Magazine of History, and the OAH Newsletter--the OAH is working hard to better serve the needs of educators who teach history in two-year colleges.
