The Organization of American Historians, founded in 1907 as the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, is the largest professional organization for the investigation, study and teaching of American History. It serves a membership of 11,000 college and university professors, high school teachers, students, archivists, public historians, and institutional subscribers such as libraries, museums, and history societies, as well as individual and institutional foreign members.
Each quarter the organization publishes the Journal of American History, the OAH Newsletter, and the quarterly OAH Magazine of History. The Annual Meeting Program, mailed in January, highlights the events of the upcoming convention. All members receive electronic access to full-text, current issues of these publications. You also may choose to receive access via JSTOR to online, fully searchable back issues (1914 to 1999) of the JAH.

Teaching
Since 1907, the organization has been committed to excellence in teaching, from universities to precollegiate classrooms to museums. The OAH Magazine of History and Teaching Units encourage the use of primary sources in the classroom. "Teaching the JAH" presents online tools to use the latest scholarly research in the Journal of American History in the U.S. survey course. OAH works on your behalf with foundations and other organizations to provide travel grants, professional development conferences, and other resources for history educators at all levels and in all settings.
Professional Advocate
OAH is a founding sponsor of the National Coalition for History and joins other cooperative efforts, including the National Humanities Alliance, that serve as a voice at national and state levels for historians and history educators. OAH also seeks respectful and equitable treatment of part-time/adjunct faculty and other historians.
Promotion of History
OAH encourages understanding and appreciation of history by the media, students, government, foundations, and the general public. The organization regularly helps journalists and filmmakers find historical consultants among its membership. Since 1994 OAH has partnered with the National Park Service to involve members in improving historical interpretation at NPS sites. OAH also offers its Distinguished Lectureship Program of more than 250 speakers for public presentations.
