Monetary awards for Missouri history dissertations and theses

The State Historical Society of Missouri seeks nominations for the Lewis E. Atherton Prizes, awarded to an outstanding doctoral dissertation and master’s thesis on Missouri history or biography. Selection criteria include originality, effectiveness of source usage, clarity, and contribution to an understanding of Missouri history. The winner of the dissertation award will receive a $1,000 check and a certificate, and the winner of the thesis award will receive a $500 check and a certificate. Checks and certificates will be presented at the State Historical Society’s annual meeting on October 2, 2010.

Nominations must be made by the department that granted the degree, and no more than two nominations for each prize are accepted annually from a department. For the 2010 prizes, nominees must have completed the doctoral degree or the master’s degree between July 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010. Three copies of the nominated work should be mailed to Dr. Gary R. Kremer, executive director, State Historical Society of Missouri, 1020 Lowry, Columbia, MO 65201-7298.
