Condition:
Family numbers 7--parents and five children, three boys and two girls, aged from two to eleven years. Two of them attend school. The house they occupy contains 4 rooms, for which they pay rental of $12 per month. Father says they would like to better themselves as regards the neighborhood, but if he moves farther from the center of the city he would be compelled to pay out too much money for car fare. He is a pressed-brick layer, which branch of the business requires greater skill, and therefore he receives $1 per day more money than the regular bricklayer. He works thirty-five weeks in the year, at $5 per day. The trades union is in first-class condition, but is overrun by apprentices. For ordinary living he uses all he makes.
