H-NET: Humanities and Social Studies Online
With over 100 humanities and social studies-based discussion forums, H-NET hosts e-mail discussion lists, linking professors, teachers and students in an exchange of ideas and materials. Every aspect of professional history--research, teaching, controversies new and old--is open for discussion; decorum is maintained by H-Net's dedicated editors. Of particular interest to history teachers are H-NET's discussions networks devoted to: Teaching American History grants [needs a new link], history teaching, National History Day, teaching the survey course and teaching history in high school.
For more than twenty-five years the National History Day program, cosponsored by the Organization of American Historians, has promoted systemic educational reform related to the teaching and learning of history in America's schools and provided a leading model of performance-based learning. NHD is a year-long education program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students produce dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries and research papers based on research related to an annual theme. These projects are then evaluated at local, state, and national competitions.
