The Organization of American Historians

Teaching Tools

In accordance with our mission, the OAH offers a variety teaching resources geared toward secondary and postsecondary learners.

OAH has partnered with numerous school districts and educational service centers across the country over the last eight years to help teachers enhance U.S. history education through Teaching American History grants.

The OAH can provide the following resources to help meet your teachers professional development and history content needs, strengthening your TAH grant program and application. Contact our TAH Grant Liaison for more information.

The OAH Distinguished Lectureship Program

Many OAH Distinguished Lecturers work with teacher workshops, summer institutes, and conferences, and they welcome the chance to do so. They can discuss specific historical content or history pedagogy in general.

The OAH Magazine of History: Lesson Plans

Each issue of the OAH Magazine of History focuses on a theme or topic of recent scholarship in American history and provides readers with informative articles, current historiography, and lesson plans.

Teaching the JAH

The Teaching the JAH project presents biannual installments that use online tools to bridge the gap between the latest scholarly research in U.S. history and the practice of classroom teaching. In this project, JAH authors demonstrate how featured articles might be taught in a U.S. history survey course.

Textbooks and Teaching

“Textbooks and Teaching” is a forum for examining the techniques and resources of American history education. Participants critically analyze pedagogical materials and discuss their experiences conveying American history to various audiences.

U.S. History Teaching Units

Co-developed by the Organization of American Historians and the National Center for History in the Schools (NCHS) at the University of California, Los Angeles, the U.S. History teaching units are based on primary documents for U.S. history at the precollegiate level and were written by teams of teachers and historians. Each contains reproducible images and lesson plans for use in the classroom.
