In Memoriam: Dr. Carol K. Bleser (1933–2013)

Dr. Carol K. Bleser passed away August 20, 2013. Dr. Bleser specialized in southern history with a concentration in the Civil War and Reconstruction. She was a professor at Colgate University from 1970 to 1985. She was the university’s first full-time female faculty member and first female full professor. She was also the first female titled professor at Clemson University, after being named the Kathryn and Calhoun Lemon Distinguished Professor of United States History from 1985 to 2000. Dr. Bleser is known for being a trailblazer for professional women and a mentor to many women who pursued education and careers. She served on the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and in 1995 was awarded for her distinguished service. She also served as president of the Southern Historical Association as well as the Southern Association of Women Historians.
