Richard Blackett holds the Andrew Jackson Chair of History at Vanderbilt University and was the visiting Harmsworth Professor at Oxford University in 2013–2014. His research focuses on the place of African Americans in the Atlantic world, particularly their efforts to end slavery and racial discrimination. He is the author, most recently, of Making Freedom: The Underground Railroad and the Politics of Slavery (2013) and The Captive‚Äôs Quest for Freedom. Fugitive Slaves, the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law, and the Politics of Slavery (2018).
