The Germany Residencies Program

The deadline has passed. Please check back summer 2019 for information.

DEADLINE: APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY OCTOBER 1, 2018.

The OAH announces that for the year 2019 there will be two resident fellowships for U.S. historians to travel to Germany.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the OAH International Committee is pleased to announce the continuation of the Residency Program in American History—Germany (Germany Residency Program) at the University of Tübingen. Funding from the University of Augsburg will also enable an extension of the program to the University of Augsburg in 2019.

The International Committee seeks applications from OAH members who are established scholars affiliated with an American or Canadian University interested in leading an advanced undergraduate/graduate student seminar in Tübingen or Augsburg.

The course would take place for a period of four to five weeks during the summer of 2019.

The seminar will cover a topic of U.S. History or the History of Transatlantic Relations of an applicant’s design, all fields and methodologies are welcome. The language of instruction is English.

The Residencies Program will provide round-trip airfare, housing for thirty days, a modest honorarium (around $1,200), support by a graduate assistant, and office space.

Tübingen is located in southwestern Germany, 25 miles south of Stuttgart. It is one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education and has a vibrant community engaged in the study of the United States.

Augsburg is the third-largest city in Bavaria and located about 60 miles north of Munich. It is also the third oldest city of Germany, named after the Roman emperor Augustus and features a beautiful medieval city center as well as a modern campus university.

The application process for the Germany residencies program requires a short CV and an outline of the planned seminar. Applicants can apply for a residency at the University of Tübingen or at the University of Augsburg or for both (in this case they should list a preference if they have one).

The deadline for application is October 1, 2018. The application materials must be sent electronically (PDF) to germanyresidency@oah.org. Please indicate “2019 Germany Residencies Program” in the subject line.
