University of Virginia Hires Post-doc to Research School's Legacy of Slavery

In October, the University of Virginia announced that it had hired Kelley Fanto Deetz to research the role of slavery at the university. Deetz received Ph.D.s in African American studies and African diaspora studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and was an assistant professor of history at Roanoke College, as well as the director of the college's public history program. Deetz was appointed by the University of Virginia to a three-year postdoctoral fellowship position. Deetz's research will focus on the role of enslaved domestic workers and cooks at the university.

Also in October, the University of Virgina's Commission on Slavery and the University held a ceremony honoring unknown slaves buried in a burial site on the university grounds. The ceremony was part of "Universities Confronting the Legacy of Slavery," a national symposium hosted by the university.
